The shooter, DeWayne Craddock, submitted a resignation letter dated May 31, 2019 just prior to the shooting, citing "personal reasons" for leaving.

Yesterday, a lone gunman shot and killed 12 people and injured four others at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In addition, one police officer was wounded but saved by his bullet-proof vest.
The gunman, identified as DeWayne Craddock, was shot and killed after a long gun battle with police. Craddock worked for 15 years as a certified professional engineer for the city of Virginia Beach in the Public Utilities Department.
Craddock used two .45 caliber pistols to carry out the attack, both of which police believe were purchased legally in 2016 and 2018.
