Dec 5, 2017:
The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.
Watch video and read a transcript of journalist John Yang (PBS NewsHour) discussing this case with the plaintiff, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (Charlie Craig and David Mullins) and the defendant, Masterpiece Cakeshop (Jack Phillips) here.
Read a transcript of the oral arguments on this case here.
Case History:
In 2012, gay couple Charlie Craig and David Mullins asked Jack Phillips (owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado) to make them a wedding cake. Phillips refused on grounds of religious freedom (Phillips is a Christian) and freedom of speech.
Phillips refusal to make a cake for Craig and Mullins is a violation of the "Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA)" which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
On August 13, 2015, the Colorado Court of Appeals upheld prior rulings in favor of Craig and Mullin (case argued by the American Civil Liberties Union's LGBT Project).
On October 23, 2017, the ACLU filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to uphold the Colorado Court of Appeals prior decision.
