On June 16, 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release entitled "The FDA takes step to remove artificial trans fats in processed foods" stating that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) are not "generally recognized as safe" for use in human food.
Food producers will have a compliance period of three years to remove PHOs from food, after which no PHOs are allowed in human food unless otherwise approved by the FDA.
PHOs are the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods.
The press released also noted:
Currently, foods are allowed to be labeled as having "0" grams trans fat if they contain less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving, including PHOs, the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods.
