Five ex-Memphis police officers were each charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, two charges of official misconduct, and one charge of official oppression in the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year old Black man.
Nichols died in the hospital on January 10, 2023 from injuries sustained during a traffic stop and "confrontation" with police officers three days prior on January 7.
According to Memphis police, Memphis officers stopped a vehicle driven by Nichols, supposedly for suspected reckless driving, but according to Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis the reason for the stop is still unknown.
After a "confrontation" with police during which Nichols was pepper-sprayed by police, Nichols fled on foot. Officers apprehended Nichols and another "confrontation" occurred which is where Nichols apparently sustained injuries at the hands of police.
After some period of time, an ambulance arrived are transported Nichols to a hospital.
According to preliminary results of an autopsy commissioned by attorneys for his family, Nichols suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating."
At a news conference Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said that the five officers, all Black, were each charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.
According to the Memphis Police Department the five officers charged are Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith. The age range of the five officers is 24 to 32 years and each served on the department for about 2.5 to five years.
After an internal investigation, the five officers were dismissed from the Memphis Police Force last Saturday due to violation of multiple departmental policies, including using excessive force, failing to intervene, and failing to render aid. All five were taken into custody last Thursday morning.
