The Texas legislature passed a sanctuary cities bill which, if signed by the governor, does the following:
- allows law enforcement to ask about a person's immigration status ("show-me-your-papers") for anyone stopped or detained
- requires local officials to comply with federal requests to hold criminal suspects for possible deportation
- threatens sheriffs and police chiefs with jail time if they don't cooperate with federal authorities
- allows the state to withhold funding from local governments acting as sanctuary cities
