Nov 24, 2017:
A terrorist attack on the al Rawdah mosque in Sinai Egypt left 235 dead and at least 100 wounded. According to witnesses, dozens of gunman in off-road vehicles bombed the crowded mosque then opened fire on people as they exited the mosque and fled.
The attack took place in the town of Bir al-Abed during Friday prayers at the mosque.
The al Rawdah mosque is known to be the birthplace of an important Sufi cleric. Some jihadist groups, including the Islamic State (IS), consider Sufism and its followers to be heretics.
The attack has been described as the deadliest militant attack in modern Egyptian history.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but IS has previously carried out numerous other attacks in the Sinai Peninsula.
