South Carolina Police Officer Charged with Murder in Shooting of Black Man

Dec 7, 2017:

U.S. District Judge David Norton sentenced Michael Slager to 20 years in prison, deciding that Slager had in fact committed second-degree murder in the shooting death of Walter Scott.

May 2, 2017:

In a plea deal, the state of South Carolina has agreed to drop a murder charge against Michael T. Slager. In exchange, Slager will plead guilty to violating Walter Scott's civil rights by using excessive force during an attempted arrest.

Dec 5, 2016:

After the jury deliberated for over 22 hours over four days and could not reach a verdict, Circuit Judge Clifton Newman declared a mistrial in the shooting death of Walter Scott, saying the case would be retried at a future date.

Nov 2, 2016:

Jury selection in the murder trial of Michael T. Slager began two days ago on October 31 and is now completed. The jury consists of six white men, five white women, and one black man.

Oct 8, 2015:

Rather than facing the prospects of a civil suit, the city of North Charleston and the Scott family have reached a $6.5 million settlement.

Jun 8, 2015:

Michael T. Slager was indicted by a grand jury in the shooting death of Walter L. Scott.

Apr 7, 2015:

Michael T. Slager, a police officer with the North Charleston police department in South Carolina, was charged with murder in the shooting of a black man which occurred on Saturday, April 4, 2015. A video shot by a bystander clearly shows the officer firing eight times at the back of Walter L. Scott as he lumbers away from the officer. The shooting incident followed a routine traffic stop for a broken taillight.
