According to a May, 2009 document written by the Society of Toxicology (SOT) entitled "Are Chemicals Killing Us?", the media overstates the risk to the American public of toxic chemicals in "everyday items" (such as baby bottles, shower curtains, iPods, lipstick, "new car smell", and non-stick frying pans).
The document cites a survey conducted by George Mason University researchers on 937 toxicologists from the Society of Toxicology. The results of the survey show that:
"Majorities of toxicologists...rate leading environmental activist groups as overstating risks"
"...the public doesn’t get a full and balanced picture of chemical risk."
