An armed gunman shot and killed 11 people, and wounded four police officers and two other people at the Tree of Life Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Police arrived on the scene and exchanged gunfire with the gunman, Robert D. Bowers, as he was leaving the synagogue. Bowers retreated and barricaded himself in a room within the synagogue and later surrendered to police.
Bowers has been charged with 29 federal criminal counts including obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs (a hate crime), and using a firearm to commit murder. Bowers has also been charged with 30 state counts including 11 counts of criminal homicide, six counts of aggravated assault, and 13 counts of ethnic intimidation.
Bowers has previously posted anti-semitic information on the social media platform Gab. Bowers posted the following message on Gab shortly before the shooting:
Why hello there HIAS! You like to bring in hostile invaders to dwell among us?
Information on the HIAS website states that HIAS is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) refugee protection organization based in Silver Spring, Maryland, guided by Jewish values, ethics, and history.
