Jul 31, 2017:

An article in today's Chicago Tribune describes a letter sent by a 17-year-old boy scout named Jasper Davidoff to Charles Dahlquist, Randall Stephenson, and Michael Surbaugh (the three leaders of the Boy Scouts of America) regarding Trump's recent speech at the Boy Scouts of America 2017 National Jamboree. In the letter, Davidoff says the following:

The president made the conscious decision to incorporate deeply divisive political speech into an event that warrants nothing of the sort. What's more, I am concerned that, in an address to an organization whose vision statement calls for the production of good citizens through the Scout Oath and Law, the president's words exemplified a destructive form of public discourse unsupported by either the Scout Oath or Law.

I believe that ... (Trump's) rhetoric told the young people looking to become better citizens that Scouting is a space for divisiveness and disrespect. I believe that many of the young people in attendance will interpret from [the] presentation that they should use Scouting to aggressively attack those they disagree with. Frankly, I believe that the Boy Scouts of America should see the fact that they sanctioned this speech as a disgrace.

Today, The Washington Post ran an op-ed written by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski entitled "Donald Trump is not well". In the op-ed, Scarborough and Brzezinski claim that "top White House staff members" warned them that the National Enquirer was going to run a negative story about them unless they "begged the president to have the story spiked". In the op-ed, they also dispute Trump's claims about their time spent at Mar-a-Lago and Trump's "bleeding badly from a face-lift" tweet regarding Brzezinski. Scarborough and Brzezinski went on to say:

More significant is Mr. Trump's continued mistreatment of women. It is disturbing that the president of the United States keeps up his unrelenting assault on women. From his menstruation musings about Megyn Kelly, to his fat-shaming treatment of a former Miss Universe, to his braggadocio claims about grabbing women's genitalia, the 45th president is setting the poorest of standards for our children. We were heartened to hear a number of Republican lawmakers call out Mr. Trump for his offensive words and can only hope that the women who are closest to him will follow their examples. It would be the height of hypocrisy to claim the mantle of women's empowerment while allowing a family member to continue such abusive conduct.

Jun 29, 2017:

Early this morning, Trump tweeted the following about Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, the hosts of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came..

...to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!

On the PBS Newshour, anchor Judy Woodruff asked Matthew Dowd (chief strategist for President George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick-Cheney in 2004) what he thought of Trump's tweets regarding Scarborough and Brzezinski. Dowd talked about having a "common level of decency", and that what Trump's said in his tweets "affects the country as a whole".

...for a president, he sets the pattern of behavior for the entire country and what we can expect for how we each other act and how we should be in politics.

...just totally looking at it pragmatically, his behavior in this, in the midst of what he is trying to do on health care and the votes he is trying to get, is incredibly counterproductive.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the March 29, 2017, travel ban preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson.

In its ruling, the court said that Trump's revised March 6 order violates existing immigration law. The court did not address the constitutionality of the ban as it applies to Muslims.

In addition, the court reversed Judge Watson's decision to put a hold on the review of vetting procedures for refugees and the six countries included in the ban.

Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority Conference, Trump said the following:

We will always support our Evangelical community, and defend your right, and the right of all Americans, to follow and to live by the teachings of their faith. And as you know, we're under siege. You understand that. But we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever. You watch.

The entrenched interests and failed, bitter voices in Washington will do everything in their power to try and stop us from this righteous cause, to try to stop all of you. They will lie. They will obstruct. They will spread their hatred and their prejudice. But we will not back down from doing what is right. Because, as the Bible tell us -- (applause) -- we know that the truth will prevail, that God's glorious wisdom will shine through, and that the good and decent people of this country will get the change they voted for and that they so richly deserve.

How about the people we do hear from every night on television? You want to hear from them? I don't think so...No, no, we want to hear from the people that we want to hear from...As long as I'm President, no one is going to stop you from practicing your faith or from preaching what is in your heart and from preaching -- and really, this is so important -- from the bottom of my heart -- from preaching from the people that you most want to hear and that you so respect. So we have taken a very, very strong position, and you picked a winner.

But we're dealing with obstructionists. The Democrats are obstructionists. You know what, it would be great to get along with them, but it seems to be impossible. They are obstructionists. And they have a healthcare plan that's a disaster, called Obamacare...And if we had the best plan in the history of the world, we wouldn't get one Democrat vote. Just remember that. If we had a plan that gave you the greatest healthcare ever in history, you wouldn't get one Democrat vote because they're obstructionists. They're bad, right now, for the country. They've gone so far left that I don't know if they can ever come back.

I remember when Republicans and Democrats would fight like hell, then they'd go out, have lunch together, have dinner together, go back, fight like hell, and get a lot of things done. Now the lunches and dinners don't take place. The level of hatred is beyond anything that I've ever seen.

But we know that families and churches, not government officials, know best how to create a strong and loving community. (Applause.) We know that parents, not bureaucrats, know best how to raise children and create a thriving society. And above all else, we know this: In America, we don't worship government. We worship God. (Applause.) Right? We worship God.

Trump announced a plan to revamp the air traffic control system in the U.S.

At its core, our new plan will dramatically improve America's air traffic control system by turning it over to a self-financing, non-profit organization. This new entity will not need taxpayer money...

Under this new plan, the Federal Aviation Administration will focus firmly on what it does best -- safety. A separate non-profit entity would be charged with ensuring route efficiency, timely service, and a long-awaited reduction in delays.

And under our plan, they [air traffic controllers] will have more financial security, professional opportunity, and far superior equipment. The best equipment anywhere in the world.

The New York Times reported that in a memo written by former FBI Director James Comey, Comey said that in a meeting he had with Trump in February, Trump said the following about the investigation of former NationaL Security Advisor Michael Flynn:

I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go...He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.

According to The New York Times, a) it's source for this information is an associate of Comey who read parts of the memo to a Times reporter, and b) the memo wasn't sent to anyone, rather it was created by Comey for the purpose of documentation of his conversation with Trump.

The White House responded by saying:

This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.

If Comey did in fact write what The New York Times reported, it could be seen as Trump trying to influence or impede the FBI investigation of Flynn.

Representative Jason Chaffetz (Republican-Utah), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to acting F.B.I. Director Andrew McCabe, demanding that the F.B.I. turn over all "memoranda, notes, summaries, and recordings" of discussions between Trump and Comey by May 24.

In an interview with Lester Holt from NBC News, Trump again said he was planning to fire James Comey before receiving the memorandum from Rod Rosenstein. Trump also said the following:

He's a showboat [Comey], he's grandstander, the FBI has been in turmoil. You know that, I know that. Everybody knows that. You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago. It hasn't recovered from that.

The author of the above article, Philip Bump, says the following about Trump and his dialog about "prime the pump":

This is the eternal undercurrent of the Trump era: Does he actually mean what he says? Is he riffing? Is he joking? Is he serious? Is he exaggerating? Is he lying? President Trump's conversations and statements and braggadocio all live in the same nebulous cloud encompassing all of those possibilities, a Schrodinger's box in which the cat has no fixed state until you look inside — and even then you're likely to be told that the very dead cat you're holding is, in fact, alive.

Commentary:

Philip Bump's description of Trump is well said and spot on (read an explanation of "Schrodinger's box" here).

So, here Trump goes again, making things up, this time taking credit for a phrase which has been around for many, many years. It's disturbing to read about the president of the country I live in talk like this. Just joking around? Doubtful. But with Trump you never really know, which is one big reason he has no business being president of the United States.

In Detroit, Michigan, in the case of the Arab American Civil Rights League v. Trump (filed on January 31), U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts ordered the Trump administration to disclose a memo that allegedly served as an outline to make the president's travel ban look like it wasn't aimed at Muslims. The memo was drafted under the guidance of Rudy Giuliani, a staunch supporter of Trump during Trump's presidential campaign.

May 9, 2017:

Based on the recommendations of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

In a memorandum (made public by the White House) from Rosenstein recommending the firing, Rosenstein notes the following:

  • "almost everyone" agrees that Comey made mistakes in his handling of the Clinton email investigation (in other words, both Democrats and Republicans agree on this)
  • Comey did not follow proper protocol when he announced, on July 5, 2016, that the investigation should be closed without prosecution (in other words, as FBI director, Comey did not have the authority to determine whether or not a prosecution should occur - that is the responsibility of the U.S. Justice Department)
  • Comey did not follow protocol when he released "derogatory information about the subject [Hillary Clinton] of a declined criminal investigation"
  • Comey's letter to Congress on October 28, 2016, where he said there were more emails to be investigated, was inappropriate
  • that both Democrats and Republicans share similar perspectives as Rosenstein (in other words, Rosenstein's recommendation is not partisan)
  • the American public and Congress are "unlikely" to regain trust in Comey in his ability to lead the FBI

Some Democrats decried the firing, and in particular its timing, as Comey is a key figure in the ongoing investigation into Russian election hacking and possible connection with the Trump campaign.

In Great Falls, Montana, the attorneys general for the states of California, New Mexico, New York, and Washington filed a lawsuit in response to Trump's executive order issued on March 28, 2017 entitled "Presidential Executive Order on Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth" which opens up the sale of coal leases on federal lands. The states argue that the order was issued without a study of what's best for the environment and taxpayers.

May 8, 2017:

In Richmond, Virginia, the entire Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, consisting of 13 judges (two recused themselves) began to hear the case against Trump's revised travel ban executive order issued on March 6.

Commentary:

Why is it necessary to impose a travel ban to review and upgrade existing immigration vetting procedures? How does a ban help that process happen? It seems to me that any review and upgrade can take place "as is", with no bans in effect.

I haven't heard the Trump administration say anything about starting the review and upgrade process. Instead, it seems as if Trump is waiting to see the outcome of the lawsuits against his executive orders. If Trump is truly concerned about the safety of our country, the process of review and upgrade should have been started as soon as the original executive order was issued.

May 5, 2017:

Trump signed the spending bill, "H.R.244 - Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017", passed by the House and Senate earlier this week.

Trump attached a signing statement to his signature reserving the right to disregard 89 different provisions in the bill, a practice reminiscent of the George W. Bush presidency.

The U.S. announced it will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) in Bonn, Germany next week, but Trump has not yet made a decision on whether or not he will keep the U.S. in the Paris Agreement.

In the U.S. Senate, the spending bill agreed to over the weekend was passed by a vote of 79-18. No Democrats voted against the bill. The bill now goes to Trump for him to sign.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, the spending bill agreed to over the weekend was passed by a vote of 309-118. Fifteen Democrats and 103 Republicans voted against the bill. The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate which has until this Friday when current government funding ends.

Two environmental groups - Earthjustice and the Natural Resources Defense Council - filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Alaska challenging Trump's "America-First Offshore Energy Strategy" executive order issued on April 28. The lawsuit argues that because the original withdrawals from drilling were made by presidential authority under Section 12(a) of the Offshore Continental Shelf Lands Act, and that those protections are permanent, Trump doesn't have the authority to make those areas available.

May 2, 2017:

Regarding the spending bill agreed to in Congress over the weekend, Trump tweeted the following:

The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!

  • an increase of $2 billion for the National Institutes of Health
  • year round Pell grants instead of the existing twice per year Pell grants
  • millions in reimbursements for New York City and Florida law enforcement for the protection of the president
  • an increase of $150 million for opioid addiction prevention and treatment programs
