A magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in Nepal with an epicenter less than 100 miles from the capital city of Katmandu. Initial reports said over 1,900 people in Katmandu had been killed and over 4,500 injured. In addition, at least 17 climbers on Mount Everest were killed due to avalanches set off by the earthquake.
