Dec 13, 2017:

By a margin of 49.9 percent to 48.9 percent, Democrat Doug Jones won the election in Alabama.

Dec 12, 2017:

Today, state of Alabama voters are going to the polls to elect a senator to replace former Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions who is now the U.S. Attorney General. Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore is running as a Republican against Democrat Doug Jones. Polls show the senate race as a dead heat.

Two days ago, Alabama's other senator Richard Shelby said he did not vote for Moore (Shelby voted early).

On Sunday, November 19, the Alabama Media Group (owner of the three largest newspapers in Alabama) ran the headline "Stand for Decency, Reject Roy Moore".

Regardless of who wins the election, I think it's worthwhile to examine Moore's highly controversial past (in reverse chronological order).

Nov 13, 2017:

Another woman, Beverly Young Nelson, claimed that Roy Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 16.

Nov 9, 2017:

An article in The Washington Post entitled "Woman says Roy Moore initiated sexual encounter when she was 14, he was 32" describes interviews with four different young women, at least one of which, if true, constitute inappropriate sexual conduct.

Jul 24, 2017:

Speaking at a meeting of the North Jefferson County Republican Club at Jim 'N Nick's BBQ in Gardendale, Alabama, Roy Moore said the following:

False religions like Islam, who teach that you must worship this way [multiple times a day, which is customary for Muslims], are completely opposite with what our First Amendment stands for.

In a unanimous 9-0 decision, Alabama's Court of the Judiciary ruled that Roy Moore violated judicial ethics by ordering state of Alabama probate judges to not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, suspending him for the remainder of his six-year term as Alabama's Supreme Court Chief Justice. The Court also ordered that Moore not be paid for the remainder of his term.

Jan 6, 2016:

Alabama's Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore ordered state of Alabama probate judges to not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, an order that goes against the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015 guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage. Moore said that until the Alabama Supreme Court determines the effect on the state of the U.S. Supreme Court's national ruling, Alabama judges are bound by the Alabama Supreme Court's decision in March of 2015 to halt same-sex marriage.

Mar 17, 2005:

Appearing on the C-SPAN program After Words with host Bill Press, Roy Moore said:

Homosexual conduct should be illegal, yes.

Later in the interview, Moore compared gay sex to bestiality:
Moore:

Just because it's [what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes] done behind closed doors, it can still be prohibited by state law. Do you know that bestiality, the relationship between man and beast is prohibited in every state?

Press:

Did I ask you about having sex with a cow?

Moore:

No you didn't.

Press:

Or a horse, or a dog?

Moore:

It's the same thing.

Press:

No it's not. You mean homosexuality is same thing as bestiality?

Moore:

It is a moral precept upon which this country was founded.

Nov 14, 2003:

In a unanimous vote, Alabama's Court of the Judiciary voted to remove Alabama Supreme Court Judge Roy Moore from office for his refusal to obey a previous order by a federal judge to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama state Supreme Court building.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson previously ruled that the Ten Commandments monument was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and violated the U.S. Constitution's principle of separation of church and state.

After the ruling, Moore said he was not surprised, and that he was being removed because he "acknowledged God". Moore also said the following:

It is a sad day in our country when the moral foundation of our law and the acknowledgment of God has to be hidden from public view to appease a federal judge.

Feb 15, 2002:

In a child-custody case in Alabama, when Roy Moore was chief justice of the Alabama supreme court, the court unanimously ruled against custody for the mother who was in a romantic relationship with another woman. The court's decision/opinion, which pontificates for quite some time about homosexuality, said the following:

Homosexual conduct is, and has been, considered abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature, and a violation of the laws of nature and of nature's God upon which this Nation and our laws are predicated. Such conduct violates both the criminal and civil laws of this State and is destructive to a basic building block of society-the family. The law of Alabama is not only clear in its condemning such conduct, but the courts of this State have consistently held that exposing a child to such behavior has a destructive and seriously detrimental effect on the children. It is an inherent evil against which children must be protected.

Thus, the policy of the law in Alabama-from its civil law to its Criminal Code to the educational programs provided to its public-school students-consistently condemns homosexual activity and the homosexual lifestyle. The effect of such a lifestyle upon children must not be ignored, and the lifestyle should never be tolerated.

Homosexuality is strongly condemned in the common law because it violates both natural and revealed law. The author of Genesis writes: "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;  male and female He created them․ For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife;  and they shall become one flesh." Genesis 1:27, 2:24 (King James). The law of the Old Testament enforced this distinction between the genders by stating that "[i]f a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination." Leviticus 20:13 (King James).
