Municipal elections were held across the entire country of Turkey.

The Republican People's Party (CHP), which opposes President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP), won mayoral elections in the two most populous cities, Istanbul (with a population of about 15 million) and Ankara (with a population of about 3.5 million). The AKP party is challenging the election results in both cities claiming "invalid votes and irregularities".

In Istanbul, CHP party candidate Ekrem Imamoglu is ahead in the vote count, but only by a narrow margin of less than 0.5% over his AKP party opponent former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

In the capital city of Ankara, CHP party candidate Mansur Yavas won with 51% of the votes. His AKP party opponent, Mehmet Ozhaseki, received just over 47%.

Voter turnout for the election was about 85%.

Since coming to power in 2002 the AKP party has won every election. The results of this election show that Erdogan's grip on power may be slipping.
