Oct 20, 2015:
By a vote of 54-45, Democrats in the U.S. Senate blocked S.1814 - Stop Sanctuary Cities Act from coming to the floor for a vote.
The bill, introduced by Louisiana Senator David Vitter, would limit federal grants to "sanctuary cities" and increase penalties for undocumented immigrants who reenter the United States illegally after being deported.
Democrats argued that the legislation undercut law enforcement and was an unacceptable substitute for more comprehensive immigration reform.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a similar bill introduced by Representative Duncan Hunter, H.R.3009 - Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act on July 23, 2015.
