In Chicago, Illinois, by a vote of 15-2, the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted to repeal a one-cent-per-ounce soda tax. The repeal is set to go into effect on December 1, 2017.
In November, 2016, the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted to levy the 1-cent-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks.
On June 27, 2017, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association filed a temporary restraining order and and asked for a preliminary injunction to block the tax.
On June 30, Cook County Judge Daniel Kubasiak issued a temporary restraining order on the tax (which was upheld by an Illinois appellate court on July 10).
On September 8 Judge Kubasiak lifted the temporary restraining order, and the tax went into effect August 2.
