Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a former Vatican ambassador to the United States, published an 11-page letter stating that both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis were long aware of sexual misconduct allegations against McCarrick. The letter also calls for Pope Francis to resign.

Pope Francis said he would not respond directly to the letter, saying the letter "speaks for itself". Francis also said:
I read that statement [the 11-page letter] this morning. I read it and I will say sincerely that I must say this, to you [the reporter interviewing Francis] and all of you who are interested: read the document carefully and judge it for yourselves.
I will not say one word on this. I think the statement speaks for itself and you have sufficient journalistic capacity to reach your own conclusions.

A grand jury report was released detailing decades of sexual abuse, misconduct, and cover-ups involving over 300 priests in six of Pennsylvania's eight Catholic dioceses (Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and Scranton). The report contains reports of sexual abuse pertaining to over 1,000 child victims, and dating back as far as 1947.
In the past, the other two Pennsylvania dioceses (Philadelphia and Altoona-Johnstown) have also been implicated in alleged sexual abuse by other grand jury reports.
The 884-page report is the result of a grand jury investigation that began in 2016 and was led by the Pennsylvania attorney general.
After months of legal challenges by attorneys representing the clergy, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the report would be released in a redacted form (without names of alleged perpetrators) to protect the rights of those alleged to have committed the abuse.
