A man disguised as a Canadian police officer shot and killed 16 people at various locations in Nova Scotia, Canada. Some of the shootings occurred in the rural town of Portapique.

At one point during the rampage the man also disguised his vehicle to make it look like a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser.

One of the 16 killed was a police officer. One other police officer was injured.

The suspect is a 51-year-old man named Gabriel Wortman. The suspect is dead, but it's unclear whether he was shot by police, took his own life, or died by some other means.

According to Time:

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada. The country overhauled its gun-control laws after gunman Marc Lepine killed 14 women and himself at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique college in 1989. Before this weekend's rampage, that had been the country's worst mass killing.

It is illegal to possess an unregistered handgun or any kind of rapid-fire weapon in Canada. The country also requires training, a personal risk assessment, two references, spousal notification and criminal record checks to purchase a weapon.

  1. Thanks for covering this sad affair. As you note this is a very rural area of Nova Scotia. Last I heard the count was 22 fatalities connected to this. Some occurred near Halifax. A further sad irony is we Americans are numbed to almost daily school shootings that have stopped with everyone homeschooling due to COVID19. Wonder if we will be able to assess the shooter’s mindset in an effort to curtail further mass murders? We learned the NZ killers motives but not Las Vegas or Newtown.
