On January 6, 2015, in Burlington, Iowa Police Officer Jesse Hill accidentally shot and killed 34-year-old Gabriel Steele while responding to a domestic dispute. Apparently, the officer was trying to defend himself from the family dog. Two shots were fired, both striking Steele, one in the arm and the other in her the chest. One of the shots grazed the dog.
On February 27, Des Moines County Attorney Amy Beavers decided not to file criminal charges against Hill. She said the officer had the right to defend himself from injury, that there's no evidence showing the officer intended to shoot Steele, and that in all likelihood the officer intended to shoot the dog.
