A federal law enforcement official said that the gun used in the WDBJ7 shooting was purchased legally and that the shooter, Vester Flanagan, passed the required background check.

Reporter Alison Parker and photographer Adam Ward for news station WDBJ7 in Roanoke, Virginia were shot and killed during a live interview at a shopping center in Moneta, Virginia. Vicki Gardner from the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, who was being interviewed at the time of the shooting, was also shot and is recovering from her injuries.
Vester Flanagan, the alleged shooting suspect, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Flanagan faxed a copy of his suicide letter to ABC News two hours after the shooting.

Sadly amazing. Obviously the gun control issue becomes front and center for........an hour, maybe half a day? How many more get shot before we get some sensible legal limits.
In New Zealand where I lived part-time for 12 years the mood is very pro-hunting with much more liberal hunting laws than in America. Obtaining/buying a hunting rifle or shotgun is very easy. Pistol/handguns require more verification. An AR-15, RPG, Uzi, any other firing device not reasonably used for hunting is absolutely forbidden. While the above shooter used a hand gun all in New Zealand must register and re-register periodically. Sound like something we might emulate in America?
