About 300 Holocaust survivors, along with French President François Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Polish President Bronisław Komorowski gathered for a memorial at the former Auschwitz Nazi death camp today, on the 70th anniversary of the camp's liberation by Soviet troops.
President Obama did not attend the memorial, but he did send a presidential delegation of ten people led by U.S. Department of Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew.
President Obama also issued a Statement by the President on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

January 27 was designated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the General Assembly of the United Nations, resolution A/RES/60/7, on November 1, 2005.
